Rooted Church

Andrew Poon

Andrew Poon has been a member at Rooted church since its launch days. If you have gotten to talk with him during your time at church, or hanging out outside of church, you probably have heard how passionate he is about helping the church function as a faithful body of Believers within the RTP area.

Here is what Andrew shares as part of what the Lord has done in his life:

"Blessed to grow up in a Christian home, Andrew understood early on what it looked like to be a follower of Christ and accepted Christ as soon as he could grasp the concept of sacrifice. As a teenager he was confronted with many other "truths" and sought to independently understand absolute truth through science, history, and even other major religions. During this process God was with Andrew and, with both humility and jubilation, Andrew came to embrace Christ's deep love for him in light of his sin and self-righteousness. Daily, Andrew is overwhelmed by the unrelenting and unwarranted way in which Christ pursues and desires him. Andrew rejoices in God's infinite glory as He shapes, navigates, and orchestrates Andrew's life each and every day and rests knowing that his Abba loves him beyond comprehension."

While working with Andrew for this project he also kindly answered these questions for us:

What is your favorite passage of Scripture? Why is this passage meaningful to you in one or two sentences?

Right now it is Philippians 4:4-7:

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness[d] be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

This passage is such a wonderful reminder of so many things that I struggle with daily; whether that be joy, gentleness, anxiety, gratitude, peace or understanding. Reading this verse helps me to frame my day resting in God's power, wisdom, and glory.

What does it look like for you to be part of the body of the church?

I think often about how in Acts the early church spread so rapidly through their uncommon community and love for all. To me, being a part of the body is being an ambassador for a Saviour who commands us in Mark 12:30-31 to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" and to "love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these.”

What brought you to Rooted?

The desire to build the type of uncommon community that was found in the early church, while also ministering to a demographic with the unique lens in life of being neither fully Asian, nor fully American.

What is an area that COVID has grown you in?

Through COVID God has provided me with a season that has allowed me to rest deeply in Him and to restore the most personal parts of my faith. It has been a season of healing and renewal that has allowed me to rejoice in His goodness and mercies.

What is your biggest hope to see happen within the Rooted family?

Ultimately, that God would use Rooted to further His kingdom and love His children despite our inequities, insufficiencies, and brokenness.

Spend a few minutes in prayer thanking the Lord for what He is doing in Andrew's life! Pray over him, his marriage, and that the Lord would continue to grow Andrew to look more like Christ.
